Dragons Reach Cathedral City Lighter Fastnet Finals

Superleague season is just around the corner and the Celtic Dragons mean business. The Dragons laid down the gauntlet this weekend as they played their Southern based Superleague opposition in the Cathedral City Fastnet Grand Prix Conference. The Celtic Dragons only took a total of 9 players to the tournament due to player injuries and their overseas players not yet in the country. However, with only 2 subs the Dragons won 2 of their 3 qualifying matches against Team Bath (19-18) , the Hertfordshire Mavericks (25-23) and lost out by 6 points to Surrey Storm (24-30) who went on to win the Southern Conference.

Ranked in second place overall the Celtic Dragons now go on to play in the finals night at Surrey Sports Park this Friday the 13th. They will face Surrey Storm and the winners of the Northern Conference the Yorkshire Jets and Northern Thunder.

Another positive for the Dragon’s side was 18 year old Goal shooter Chelsea Lewis who came away with player of the conference at yesterday’s event. With many of the England Team netballers playing for their individual franchises, it was a great accolade for the young welsh netballer who was given the title ‘threepointmagic’ after her dramatic shooting from outside the circle led to roars from the crowd.

High performance coach Melissa Hyndman said ‘The start of our Dragons campaign has been strong and I’m especially impressed with our younger players. I’ve got 5 top players still to bring in to my Dragons side this season and I’m only looking for good results. The Fastnet has given me a sneak peak at what the other franchises have to offer and I’m looking forward to having a full squad and starting the campaign on the 20th.’
